This piece is a response to watching the Hong Kong protest of 2014 via live stream in Chicago. The protest happened in the streets of Admiralty, Tsuen wan, and Mongkok but was also accessible in my Chicago apartment through Xfinity wifi.

Most of the sculptures were made at the Oak street beach, using sand as a mold to make cement and bamboo sculptures. Included are plaster and wax objects molded in a Hong Kong parcel my mom sent me to ship my belongings to Chicago. Other objects were made with domestic objects.

In this position, instead of flattening by recycling and reusing these blurry protest images, I made 20 sculptures to cement each year of living in Hong Kong during this special administration. 
The sculptures are paired with a script called “statistical cement of comedy (Monuments of sub-tit-les). These dialogues are a collection of clips from radio recordings and movies made in Hong Kong that I heard as white noise at home. By reflecting on the foreshadowing and predication of this protest, I used the dates and methods of the recordings to convey the collective memory of transferring independence.
