Currently placed in the Jackson Park Conservatory (due to delayed construction of the Iowa Building), the Garden Girl Sculpture was originally drawn and intended as a fountain piece. During a site visit, I encountered someone practicing tai chi and noticed that there had been graffiti within the bathroom walls. The Chicago park district has proposed to renovate and renew the space, but has been unable to move forward with these plans as the total project cost would amount to $851,500. Using the set-up of a devised theater, I hoped to accept the ruin. Scaling a blueprint of the Garden Girl to be life-sized, I abstracted the (garden) girl’s body to create pieces of red chalk that reflect vague portions of her limbs. With the chalk, I invite those who enter to draw on the Iowa building. Etched with a riddle, each piece reads:
